Setbacks and Fire Location

Always observe the following Safety considerations when burning.

  • Never Burn in strong wind conditions!
  • Protect yourself from flames and sparks!
  • Do not use fuels to ignite your fire.!
  • Fire Watch and Suppression Tools
    • Suppression Tools include but are not limited to shovels and pics or domestic water supply and or portable water supply.
    • Fire Watch is conducted during and after burning.¬† Never leave your fire unattended.
    • Fully extinguish your fire with water.
  • When storing unburnt charcoal or wood, place in a sealed steel container outdoors and away from other combustibles.

Before burning there are considerations about where your open fire or burning appliance should be placed.

For backyard burning in piles there are two categories of fire, Category 2 (piles under 1m in height and 2m in diameter) and Category 3 (piles larger than 2m in diameter, or multiple Category 2 fires on one property).

Category 2 setbacks

  • 10 meters from any building, structure, fence, tree, or hedge.
  • 500 metres from the nearest property line of schools, hospitals, and care facilities

Category 3 setbacks

  • 100 metres from buildings, structures, fences, trees, or hedges.
  • 1000 metres from the nearest property line of schools, hospitals, care facilities

Campfires

  • 7.5 meters from any building, structure, fence, tree, or hedge.
  • Placed in an area with no combustible materials such as dry grass, overhanging branches.
  • Placed on mineral soil and surrounding by non combustible barrier such as steel or stone.

Burn Barrells

  • 7.5 meters from any building, structure, fence, tree, or hedge.
  • Placed in an area with no combustible materials such as dry grass, overhanging branches.
  • Placed on a surface such as mineral soil, gravel or stone.
  • Barrell must be in good condition and covered with wire screen to prevent ember casting.
  • 500 metres from the nearest property line of schools, hospitals, and care facilities

Solid Fuel Appliances

  • 7.5 meters from any building, structure, fence, tree, or hedge.
  • Placed in an area with no combustible materials such as dry grass, overhanging branches.
  • Appliance should be in good condition and use a spark arrestor if equipped with a chimney.
  • Examples: ¬†bread/pizza oven, charcoal bbq/smoker
